Your private label guide

An idea, an existing brand, or simply a direction you want to explore. This guide takes you through the decisions, the process and the support available as you develop your own fragrance.

Chapter 01

What private label means at Basenote

Private label brings the work of creating your own fragrance together: fragrance development, product design, packaging, manufacturing and delivery, with brand and launch support where you need it.

You can work with Basenote from the first idea through to launch, or bring the team into a particular stage. The project is shaped around what you want to create, the audience you want to reach and the support you need.

Chapter 02

Who it is for

A fragrance can be the beginning of a new business, an extension of an established brand or a product created for a particular audience or occasion. These six starting points describe the kinds of projects Basenote can support.

01

Start-ups & new brands

You do not need to arrive with a finished brief, formula or supply chain. We can help shape the concept, fragrance, product, packaging and route into production around the audience and price point you want to reach.

BEST FOR
First-time founders · new fragrance brands · early-stage concepts

02

Established brands

Add fragrance to an existing brand without having to manage fragrance houses, component suppliers and manufacturers separately. We can handle the full process or slot into the stages you need support with.

BEST FOR
Brand extensions · new product lines · existing customer bases

03

Creators & influencers

Turn your personal brand, community or creative direction into a fragrance product that feels genuinely connected to you. We can support everything from concept and storytelling through to fragrance development, packaging and production.

BEST FOR
Creators · influencers · public figures · personal brands

04

Retailers & hospitality

Develop fragrance products around your environment, audience or customer experience, from retail lines and signature scents to gifting and hospitality concepts. We can build around existing brand guidelines or develop the product direction with you.

BEST FOR
Retailers · hotels · venues · hospitality groups

05

Corporate & private projects

Create fragrance for a specific moment, campaign or audience without needing to build a full fragrance brand around it. We can support focused projects, short runs and bespoke commissions with the same production and compliance standards.

BEST FOR
Corporate gifting · events · campaigns · private commissions

Chapter 03

The journey, idea to market

The full journey spans ten stages. You may need support across all of them, or arrive with some elements already in place. The stages below explain how the idea, fragrance, product and launch connect.

  1. 01

    Idea

Bring us the thought, reference or ambition. We’ll help shape what it could become.

You do not need a finished brief. A reference, an audience or an ambition can be the starting point for shaping the concept together.

  2. 02

    Strategy

Define the audience, positioning, price point and commercial direction.

The audience, positioning and target price point give the fragrance and product decisions a shared commercial direction.

  3. 03

    Fragrance development

Develop, sample and refine the scent until it’s ready for production.

Basenote can develop the scent with its in-house chemist, refine an existing direction or work with a fragrance you already have.

  4. 04

    Product design

Choose the bottle, cap, decoration and finish around the brief and budget.

Bottle, cap, decoration and finish are considered around the brief and budget. Existing components can be incorporated subject to technical and production requirements.

  5. 05

    Packaging

Develop the carton, inserts, print and finishes that complete the product.

The carton, inserts, print and finishes complete the product. Custom packaging can affect the overall project timeline.

  6. 06

    Branding

Build the story and identity, or work within the brand you already have.

The story and identity can be developed with you, or the project can follow your existing brand guidelines. Branding can also be scoped separately.

  7. 07

    Digital

Create the website, ecommerce and digital assets needed to launch.

Website, ecommerce and digital launch assets can form part of the support you need. Their scope follows the requirements of your project.

  8. 08

    Production

Move the approved product into filling, assembly, quality checks and packing.

Once the product is approved, the process moves into filling and assembly, with quality checks and packing before delivery.

  9. 09

    Delivery

Coordinate the finished stock from production to its final destination.

Finished stock is coordinated to its final destination. Shipping and delivery are among the factors that affect the final project cost.

  10. 10

    Marketing

Plan the launch, content and campaigns that take the fragrance to market.

Launch planning, content and campaigns help take the fragrance to market. Support can be focused on the stages you need.

What to expect

A typical starting point is 500 units per fragrance, with indicative unit costs from around £20. These are guides for an initial conversation: the product, components and volume all affect the final scope and cost.

A typical project takes around 8–12 weeks. Bespoke fragrance development, custom packaging and more complex projects can take longer. The fragrance, bottle, packaging, shipping, delivery and level of support all need to be considered together.

Support can range from a focused service to full end-to-end delivery. Branding and creative support can be scoped separately, and fragrance oils can be supplied without a full private label order.

Chapter 05

What you need to bring

Nothing needs to be finished before you get in touch. You can arrive with a developed fragrance, a rough idea, a reference or simply a direction you want to explore.

If you already know your audience or target price point, those details can help shape the concept. If you have a bottle, packaging, fragrance or other components, Basenote can build around them, subject to technical and production requirements.

An existing identity or set of brand guidelines can also guide the project. Where those elements are still open, brand positioning, storytelling, visual identity and packaging can be part of the work.

Chapter 06

Ownership, compliance and international clients

Fragrance ownership depends on how it is developed. Bespoke formulations, licensed fragrances and existing formulas can have different arrangements. Basenote will make the ownership position clear before development begins.

Compliance is one of the capabilities Basenote brings to the process. Focused projects and bespoke commissions receive the same production and compliance standards described for the wider private label service.

Basenote works with clients internationally and can support projects across different markets. Share the intended market and destination when discussing the project so they can form part of the conversation.
